Beside effects, I think the CSS properties mix-blend-mode and background-blend-mode (more info on MDN: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/mix-blend-mode and https://developer.mozilla.org/pt-BR/docs/Web/CSS/background-blend-mode) can add a lot of design possibilities.
A common use case of mix-blend-mode is to make a text legible on different backgrounds.
IE: Set a text color to black and make it automatically change to white when it's on top of a black background.
And for background-blend-mode it's nice to combine different images, gradients and solids to create artistic styles that go beyond the filter effects.
