This would be very helpful when setting up multi-language sites or sites for companies with sub-branches that have separate sites/domains.
You can already do this with your domain name registrar using their "domain name forwarding" service. Here is one such example with GoDaddy:

See your point @Johnny Liabø, this could be solved by paying an extra hosting fee for each domain that is connected to a different string other that the index page.
I could see why they would not implement this, as people could put multiple sites into the same project
