I think it would be useful to add layers to the element tree so that you don't need to see every single node at once.
For example, if you select an element there should be a small button next to the collapse all, expand all to add a layer. This layer would make that particular node clickable with an arrow so that you could show only that part of the tree and not the nodes above it.
