CMS - Keyboard shortcuts & interaction improvements

Having the CMS is great, but its input mechanism still feels like editing a MySQL-database. Therefore, some ideas to make using the CMS and Editor easier and faster for us WF-enthousiasts.

1. Keyboard shortcuts to speed up changes and allow for faster data input

Right now, the CMS editor is mouse-based. Thus, making changes ultimately ends up with a LOT of mouse movement and clicking the "SAVE" button. I'd opt-in to allow for more keyboard-based control of the CMS and the Editor to improve speed, with options such as:

  • Save CMS item (CTRL + S)
  • Next or previous item - and possibly move through entire CMS (CTRL + Arrows)
  • Search inside collection (CTRL + F)
  • Search inside CMS (CTRL + SHIFT + F)
  • Save as Draft (CTRL + SHIFT + S)
  • Publish all (CTRL + SHIFT + P)

2. Batch Edit : Edit multiple CMS-items at once

Editing multiple CMS-items in the Designer and Editor is a pain. It takes endless mouse action (and thus time) to do simple tasks such as assign a reference field, and then save the change. [see point 1] Especially if you make changes to the settings of an existing CMS-collection, changing 10+ items is horrendous.

Currently we can "delete", "draft" and "archive" items. Looking through this forum we like to have these options to edit multiple items at once:

  • Assign a (multi)-reference field for multiple items
  • Change any value for multiple items [such as rating, price, published date, author, etc.]
  • Duplicate multiple items

Yes please! Also, please add the "c" keyboard shortcut to open the CMS panel (like "p" for pages, "j" for media, "a" for components...)

Yes please! For my team specifically, we suffer with selecting from a single-reference collection that has about 300 items in it. LOTS OF SCROLLING. Would love type-ahead. Like when you open a dropdown with a list of states and you can type G to jump to Georgia. This is SO painful right now and opens up a big possibility for user error.
