I think that the template for CMS pages is great, but sometimes, you want to use all that the CMS feature provides - custom fields, the url structure with the collection prefix, etc - and at the same time, you want the design of the collection page to be unique.
In other words, I could have a design for a collection page, and a completely different design for another collection page. Or maybe a different kind of template.
I've been doing websites in WordPress for years, so let me try to give an example based on my experience with it. On WP, you have the custom post types, which is basically the same thing as the CMS collections. Each custom post type page can have custom fields, but you can select different templates for each one of the custom post type pages (while on Webflow, you can only have one type of template for a collection page). OR, you can use a page builder to build the content of your custom post type page (which would be similar to my original idea - not using any templates at all and building the content of the page from scratch).
Obviously you could just treat collection pages as individual pages. But then you loose the advantage of using custom fields and collection lists, for example. OR, let's say, you want to have a base template for your collection page, but on part of the page, you want to have a custom design. That's not possible today.
A good example is a portfolio project page. Each project page could present the content in several different ways, using different types of transitions, components, etc. Right now, all you can do is create a template with description and maybe some sections with screenshots.
