Hi all - as the first step toward support for larger breakpoints, we’ve added controls that let you resize the Designer canvas and preview how your site looks on larger devices. For more details, check out our update.

Custom breakpoints that are designed to accomodate the content and not device sizes are so critical. So often I find myself having to write custom CSS because the default breakpoints break (no pun intended) the content.

That's great new, thanks! Could you squeeze in the table landscape one ( while you're at it? :)

Maybe you could add manual adding of custom breakpoints that aren't reflected in the editor views to save us adding custom code as a half-way house?

Specifically, it's wide tablets (even more specifically, iPads) that we could do with being able to target. So many of my layouts benefit from a breakpoint at 1024px..

I think this is a bad Idea IMO, because the breakpoints that webflow has now is perfect.. Foundation6, bootstrap, they have the basic grid flows just like web flow.. divs are divs regardless with a custom css option not adding it to the head but and actual option to add custom css would be the best option.. because you can add a basic div and you can set its max width etc.. just add a style sheet editor of some sort to add custom css.

This would be very useful, maybe tied to 1280, 1920 (FHD), 2560 (QHD/WQHD), 4096/3840 (DCI 4K/4K UHD) and while on the same topic then may as well build in 7680 (8K UHD) as the 2020 Olympics will be broadcast in that?

Maybe the 8K is a bit extreme but it’ll be future proofed if Media Queries are still the way to go in the next few years?

The difference between 1280 and 1920 is quite a lot even now in terms of layout and design, let alone 960 > 1920 and higher.

  • David commented
    May 22, 2018 02:49

I'm not sure what the issue is here, don't use the container and you can have a site at any size you like, the only issue really is the grid. The biggest problem is designing for landscape tablet which right now isn't possible and is a huge hack to get this to work.

  • Rijk van Wel commented
    September 11, 2018 09:28

Doesn't have to be custom for me, but the large/XL breakpoints are really needed.. Of course you can custom code the media queries, but by not having them you lose a lot of the power of the designer, as your site will no longer look representative (because the custom code is not executed in the designer). And of course it is tedious to custom code all the rules (heading sizes, widths, margins etc).

    November 13, 2018 09:18

Just adding a couple of larger breakpoints really isn't the answer here, what if they don't suit my design needs? What if I need more? What if I need smaller ones?

The content and design should dictate the breakpoints, not the other way around.

I'd say scrap this, and prioritise custom breakpoints.

  • Samuel Kobe commented
    November 27, 2018 22:26

How is this still an issue?

I understand that infrastructure and stability are major priorities, but this has been an issue now for years. The 940px breakpoint as the largest option is quite outdated.

Custom breakpoints would be ideal, but with no implementation of the Large breakpoint(1200px) or XL breakpoint (1440px) I find myself feeling disappointed with the progress.

Ultimately I'm frustrated because this is unquestionably and issue for 95% of designers with where displays are at currently. I work on a 27" iMac, and not unlike others above, I feel its not too great a expectation to design on our own displays (2015 iMac for reference, its not like large monitors are brand new).

The "hacking" with custom CSS does work sure, but having to view the site in a separate tab so I can see the correct breakpoints is so incredibly frustrating when designing/testing. Please please bump this up in the queue of priority.

Also if you read this and you agree, add a comment of your own. Webflow can only prioritize some many features at a time. If you want this one, let them know.

I want my sites to look modern on large desktops and have the ease of modifying it in webflow. Having to be constrained in app to 960 during the design phase is a major deal breaker, and it becomes more so the longer this drags on

PLEASE!!!!! Bring this to fruition. It is beyond frustrating trying to design for the desktop breakpoint, only to realize when you view it on a larger monitor/widescreen (or working the other way around), things don't line up properly! It would be VERY helpful to have a widescreen breakpoint, or the ability to just adjust & set our own breakpoints if necessary!

Having just updated to large 4k monitors at work, it is now evident to me just how much I need to change my practices to accommodate for large screens. I usually use custom containers with a max width of 1200px, it looks like I will need to be able to target 4k monitors with a larger max width. Is there any code that doesn't target a webflow pre-built container I can use and what is the recommended max width to use.

Webflow doesn't basically support 1440 and 1920 breakpoints.
All major CSS libraries support those breakpoints as standard.
Bootstrap, Foundation, Bulma, Semantic UI, Ui Kit...

I started with Webflow a few Weeks ago. Love the tool, thank you.

BUT, this feature is not supposed to be in the "Wishlist". Almost all of the designs I get are at 1440px. I´m aware of a custom code solution, but that brings difficulties with it. And, we want it nativly inside Webflow. Please rethink your breakpoint infrastructure as soon as possible.

We need breakpoints especially for bigger devices AND we need the possibilities to cascade our breakpoints from mobile-first up. (mobile-first isn't coming, it's already here).

Absolutely ridiculous the things they prioritize over getting breakpoints right. Webflow belongs on the scrap heap, and I can't wait for a new generation of design tools to put them in their place. Then they can stick with being a site builder/hosting which is clearly all they care about.

    Hi Webflow team,

I just became a customer a few days ago and am now seriously considering asking for a refund. Not having breakpoints for larger screens is a deal breaker. It makes this entire platform obsolete in 2019/2020. I'm shocked that this is a wish list item and not an all-hands-on-deck existential emergency over at Webflow. Very disheartening to read that people have been requesting this for over 5 years and no movement.

Devices are changing quickly. We need to be able to adapt. We now have to adjust designs to dance around legacy architecture. I thought the entire point of this service is to allow for rapid development of custom websites.

Some communication from Webflow on timelines / commitments on this issue would go a long way. I would love to be able to recommend this platform but currently I cannot because it's not future proof (or even present proof).

    Thanks for listening.

    I'm rooting for you guys!
