    Admin Response

    2/9/18 Update:
Hey everyone. Unfortunately we have not had much movement on this last year. We scoped out and designed a solution that included a new 1200px and 1440px media query, but ended up delaying development for various technical reasons. We prioritized infrastructure projects that would make the Webflow platform more reliable and other features that would have a higher impact for web designers and their clients. There are many improvements we want to make and we’re hoping to tackle them later this year, but we don’t have any dates set in stone. The two popular ways you can workaround the pesky 960px container limitation for larger screens is:

    1. add custom code to expand the container on larger screens(
    2. create a custom container using a div block, set a max width of 1200px on it, and use that for your container needs.

    1/19/17 Update:

We will be adding breakpoints for Large (1200px) and XL (1440px) displays. We're continuing to investigate custom breakpoints for the future, however, custom breakpoints will require large infrastructure changes.

Hey Sergie would be god to know what part is planned? Larger breakpoints or maybe even custom sizes :D

Oh yes this please OMG. This is like a super-must for now. Too many screen sizes and too many custom-code to do for now.

Custom breakpoints that are designed to accomodate the content and not device sizes are so critical. So often I find myself having to write custom CSS because the default breakpoints break (no pun intended) the content.

That's great new, thanks! Could you squeeze in the table landscape one ( while you're at it? :)

Maybe you could add manual adding of custom breakpoints that aren't reflected in the editor views to save us adding custom code as a half-way house?

Specifically, it's wide tablets (even more specifically, iPads) that we could do with being able to target. So many of my layouts benefit from a breakpoint at 1024px..

Hi Sergie, the same question here. I'm just going to design a new project for webflow and I would really like to start drawing a website with 1440px. Is it coming within next 2 week or shall I forget about it?

Hi! I'm curious as to why not 1280 instead of 1200 and probably making add 1024 would be a great idea as well also.

I think this is a bad Idea IMO, because the breakpoints that webflow has now is perfect.. Foundation6, bootstrap, they have the basic grid flows just like web flow.. divs are divs regardless with a custom css option not adding it to the head but and actual option to add custom css would be the best option.. because you can add a basic div and you can set its max width etc.. just add a style sheet editor of some sort to add custom css.

This would be very useful, maybe tied to 1280, 1920 (FHD), 2560 (QHD/WQHD), 4096/3840 (DCI 4K/4K UHD) and while on the same topic then may as well build in 7680 (8K UHD) as the 2020 Olympics will be broadcast in that?

Maybe the 8K is a bit extreme but it’ll be future proofed if Media Queries are still the way to go in the next few years?

The difference between 1280 and 1920 is quite a lot even now in terms of layout and design, let alone 960 > 1920 and higher.

It almost looks like this is possible when I go to the tablet view and drag to show the rulers and adjust different breakpoints (see attached). Just let us expand it wider than 960!

  • David commented
    22 May 02:49

I'm not sure what the issue is here, don't use the container and you can have a site at any size you like, the only issue really is the grid. The biggest problem is designing for landscape tablet which right now isn't possible and is a huge hack to get this to work.

    The most important function

  • Rijk van Wel commented
    11 Sep 09:28

Doesn't have to be custom for me, but the large/XL breakpoints are really needed.. Of course you can custom code the media queries, but by not having them you lose a lot of the power of the designer, as your site will no longer look representative (because the custom code is not executed in the designer). And of course it is tedious to custom code all the rules (heading sizes, widths, margins etc).

Last update was from 1.5 years ago.. Any news on this?

  • Jim Collinson commented
    13 Nov 09:18

Just adding a couple of larger breakpoints really isn't the answer here, what if they don't suit my design needs? What if I need more? What if I need smaller ones?

The content and design should dictate the breakpoints, not the other way around.

I'd say scrap this, and prioritise custom breakpoints.

  • Samuel Kobe commented
    27 Nov 22:26

How is this still an issue?

I understand that infrastructure and stability are major priorities, but this has been an issue now for years. The 940px breakpoint as the largest option is quite outdated.

Custom breakpoints would be ideal, but with no implementation of the Large breakpoint(1200px) or XL breakpoint (1440px) I find myself feeling disappointed with the progress.

Ultimately I'm frustrated because this is unquestionably and issue for 95% of designers with where displays are at currently. I work on a 27" iMac, and not unlike others above, I feel its not too great a expectation to design on our own displays (2015 iMac for reference, its not like large monitors are brand new).

The "hacking" with custom CSS does work sure, but having to view the site in a separate tab so I can see the correct breakpoints is so incredibly frustrating when designing/testing. Please please bump this up in the queue of priority.

Also if you read this and you agree, add a comment of your own. Webflow can only prioritize some many features at a time. If you want this one, let them know.
